Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp)

Your adventure begins at Londorossi Gate (2,250 meters) after completing the necessary park formalities. Trek through the lush montane forest to reach Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820 meters) in about 3-4 hours. This short first day is designed for acclimatization and offers early glimpses of the diverse wildlife inhabiting the lower levels of Kilimanjaro.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

Ascend from Mti Mkubwa through the forest and into the heath and moorland zones, reaching Shira 1 Camp (3,505 meters) after approximately 5-6 hours of hiking. This stage provides stunning views across the Shira Plateau, with its ancient lava flows and stark, beautiful landscape.

Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

Trek east across the Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp (3,810 meters). This relatively easy day allows for further acclimatization and offers spectacular panoramic views. The total trekking time is around 3-4 hours, leaving the afternoon for optional exploratory walks around the plateau.

Day 4: Shira 2 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Continue from Shira 2 to Barranco Camp (3,976 meters), with an important acclimatization stop at the Lava Tower (4,630 meters). The trek up to the Lava Tower tests your adaptation to altitude before descending to Barranco Camp, involving about 6-7 hours of hiking. The camp is set in a beautiful, enclosed valley beneath the Breach and Great Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Begin with a challenging climb over the steep Barranco Wall, then descend through alpine desert terrain to Karanga Camp (3,995 meters). This day involves 4-5 hours of hiking and is crucial for acclimatization, preparing you for the summit push.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Ascend to Barafu Camp (4,673 meters) over 3-4 hours. The route traverses a desolate alpine desert with expansive views in all directions. After reaching the camp, spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the midnight summit attempt.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Embark on the summit attempt around midnight, climbing steep scree and snow to reach Stella Point (5,756 meters) on the crater rim, followed by a trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters). This gruelling overnight climb takes about 7-8 hours. After reaching the summit, descend to Mweka Camp (3,068 meters) for overnight, concluding a challenging but exhilarating day.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Departure

Complete your descent through the lush forest to Mweka Gate (1,640 meters), taking about 3-4 hours. Receive your summit certificates and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment before transferring back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
