Marangu Route – 5 to 6 days

Description

Experience the adventure of a lifetime on the Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the oldest and most established path for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. This 5 to 6-day itinerary offers a direct trek to the summit of Africa’s highest peak, blending breathtaking natural beauty with historical significance. The Marangu Route is unique as it provides sleeping huts along the trail with basic amenities, making it a popular choice for those who prefer not to camp. The climb progresses through diverse ecological zones, from rainforests to alpine deserts and ultimately the arctic zone at the summit. This journey not only challenges your physical and mental endurance but also offers ample opportunity to learn about the local Chagga culture and the mountain’s environment.

Day by Day Itineray
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Start from Marangu Gate (1,860 meters) and trek through lush montane forest to reach Mandara Hut (2,700 meters). This first day’s hike is relatively gentle, taking about 4 to 5 hours. Spend the night at Mandara Hut, near the Maundi Crater, which offers a great opportunity for a short evening walk and a chance to acclimatize.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

On the second day, trek from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720 meters). The hike takes about 6 to 8 hours and transitions from rainforest into moorland, where you can see plants like giant lobelias and groundsels. The increase in altitude makes this a challenging day, and the views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks provide encouragement along the way. Stay overnight at Horombo Hut, which also serves as an acclimatization stop for those who opt for the 6-day trek.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (Optional)

If following the 6-day route, use this day for acclimatization. You can take a day hike to Zebra Rocks (4,020 meters) to help adjust to the altitude. The surrounding landscapes are stunning and offer a relaxed day of walking.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Ascend from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700 meters). This segment takes about 5 to 6 hours, moving through the “saddle,” a barren landscape between the two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. Prepare for an early night, as the summit push starts just after midnight.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Begin around midnight, trekking to the summit through Gilman’s Point (5,685 meters) located on the crater rim. Continue onto Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), which takes about 7 to 8 hours from Kibo Hut. Reaching the summit in the early morning allows for spectacular views of the crater and its icecaps. After spending a short time at the summit, descend to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest. This makes for a very long and rewarding day of 12 to 14 hours of hiking.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Departure

Trek back down from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, taking about 5 to 6 hours. This final descent passes through moorland and forest. Receive your climbing certificate at the gate, then a vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.
